About NHSG

The NHSG will include 14.5 miles of rail trail plus a combination of on and off road connection route through Portsmouth, meeting Maine’s Eastern Trail at Memorial Bridge.

As of June 2022 all 14.5 miles of trail are funded for construction and programmed in the State Ten Year Transportation Plan.

The largest section, from Portsmouth south to Hampton, is currently in engineering design and is scheduled to open in 2024. Remaining sections are funded with construction programmed for 2030 and 2032 respectively, though through private sector fundraising the intention is to generate adequate non-federal funding to convince the state to accelerate the construction schedule for the two remaining phases.
